Members Profile

Diane Ruhkala-Bell

Background: Creating art is part of who I am, from childhood until now. I studied art at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and have continued taking workshops and classes over the years. There is always something new to learn and spark my creativity.

Description of my art and medium: It's intuitive, somewhat abstract. I do mixed media, two dimensional work with printmaking, collage, assemblage, acrylic and encaustic, often interwoven in one piece and sometimes not. I prefer not knowing what my end product will be. I love a good surprise but there are some disasters.

Growth and development of my art: There is always an ebb and flow in creative energy," wow" moments, frustrating moments, times to experiment and times to just let it flow. I can't say if my work has grown or if it just changes.

Current work: Just in the last couple  months I have been learning about encaustics (beeswax and pigment). I love the layering effects of wax but I haven't yet incorporated into my other work.

Artists that inspire me: Oh so many! I spend lots of time in galleries and looking at art publications and books. When I see something that kind of takes my breath away with its originality or perfection, be it historical or cutting edge, I am inspired.

Blue Line: I have been a part the organization like forever.. from working with a group of painters in the basement of the Hamen House to helping install shows right now. I was on the design committee for the current Blue Line Gallery and I have worked for Roseville Arts in all four of  its locations.

Professional and personal success: I was recently honored to receive the "Best of Show" award for the current William Jessup University juried exhibition.  "Celebrating Artistic Expression". I am also showing my work, until January, at the Roseville Chamber of Commerce Building on Douglas Blvd .I love sharing my work and feel grateful numerous awards I have received over the years and to be in part of art collections throughout our country and Europe. I will again share my art work and methods of working during the spring Art Studio Trek, April 28 and 29, 2012.

Interview with Jack Richardson

Art work by Jack is on display at the Blue Line Gallery on Vernon St Roseville, CA from
Dec 2 - Jan 7 as part of
"Aqua-Scapes: Capturing the Serenity and Dynamics of Water"

Don't forget to stop by and see this exquisite exhibition

How do you describe your art work to others? -Kathleen
I tell them I make stuff out of rocks. If they don't sniff and walk away, I am more than willing to spend time telling them how and why. - Jack

Do you only work in one medium? -Kathleen
Almost all my work is stone. I am a student of art in all its forms. I actively engage in the study of both the aesthetics and techniques of different disciplines within the art field. My work reflects this study and changes because of it. - Jack

What are you working on right now? -Kathleen
Following the Chinese thought that lives are changed every 21 years, I have suspended working at the lathe and gone back to making sculpture. I may not have another 21 years to work, so thinking too far ahead is not a priority. -Jack

Do other artists inspire you? -Kathleen
I am inspired by those artists who do work that will last a thousand years. I have no interest in transitory work. Therefore, I am most inspired by the Venus of Willendorf, a small limestone figure about 35000 years old, Isamu Noguchi's granite work, Henry Moore's stone sculpture, Ruth Duckworth's clay sculpture, Bob Stocksdale's entire life's production and the anonymous Egyptian diorite carvers. -Jack

How long have you worked with Blue Line Gallery? Have you found a lot of success through your art? -Kathleen
I am new to Blue Line Gallery.    I find their staff professional and very generous of their time and energy. I have always been able to sell what I make, which has allowed me the freedom to produce more. I consider my life in art to be a success because of that. -Jack

Press Release for December Show

AQUA - SCAPES: Capturing the Serenity and Dynamics of Water
Imi Lehmbrock-Hirschinger
The Blue Line Gallery - Roseville Arts is proud to present "Aqua - Scapes" a look at four visions of water and its beauty by Sacramento area award winning artists Marie Winkler (painting), Imi Lehmbrock-Hirschinger (painting), James Hirschinger (photography) and Jack Richardson (sculpture).

Maria Winkle
The exhibit is designed to stimulate the senses and create a calm and deep appreciation for what we know simply as water. The processes and styles of the artists present an integrated but diverse display of images related to the visual aspects of water, its symbolic, spiritual and healing qualities as well as its overall importance for survival.

"Water plays an essential role in our lives. It nourishes and cleanses our physical self and our spirit. It provides us with a sense of serenity as well as fearful awe of its many changing facets. We often take it for granted and overlook the forms and magical beauty created by its dynamics." James Hirschinger

Jack Richardson
James Hirschinger
"Water as a subject has appeared throughout art history and throughout cultures; it is a universal icon. The purpose of this exhibit is to heighten awareness of one of our planet's most important natural resources; one that is rapidly becoming more polluted and diminishing in quality." Maria Winkler
