Blue Line entertains a crowd on 3rd Saturday
Photo Show Winners Announced

ROSEVILLE, CA, January 18, 2011 — More than 300 visitors gathered at the Blue Line Gallery on Saturday to celebrate the openings of three new exhibits and to hear who won the awards in the gallery’s 2011 Open Photography Exhibition.

Juror Lewis Kemper left regrets for not being able to meet all the “talented photographers whose work was accepted” into the Photography Exhibition, but curator Beth Rohlfes passed along Kemper’ “congratulations to all the winners and to all of those who made this the highest quality show I have ever had the privilege of judging!” Tim Fleming of Petaluma accepted the $300 Best of Show award for his enlarged color photo of leaves and sea pods in “Lanterns #3.” Merit awards went to Roseville’s John Johnson; Bob Towery from Granite Bay; Bob Perrin, Auburn; Jim Klein, Citrus Heights; David Robertson, Davis; and Richard Ashby of Sacramento.

Saturday’s visitors lingered long to enjoy the relaxed strains of blues band, Breez, share in enlightened conversation and learn from artist demonstrations by Maliheh Bartolomeo and Debbie Gualco, exhibitors in the “New Beginnings” show. Guests Bob and Penny Cooley were pleasantly surprised to encounter the fine work from Cooley Middle School students in the Children’s Gallery.  All three exhibits will continue in the gallery through February 12.

NEW BEGINNINGS AT THE BLUE LINE
Artists Start 2011 off with Fresh New Work

ROSEVILLE, CA, January 5, 2011—New and renewing member artists of Roseville Arts Blue Line Gallery will celebrate the New Year with “New Beginnings,” an exhibit opening at the Gallery on January 15, 2011.

This exhibit features the work of 41 artists whose work represents a variety of media, subject matter and artistic styles. Among the entries is a ceramic and neon piece by artist Patty Paige Short. “Heart Strings” is from a recent series Short completed of figurative works infused with emotional purpose.

Joon Park’s “Two is One” finely-rendered acrylic painting of two fish and a landscape was inspired by Park’s fascination with time. “It's amazing how earth revolves around the everyday,” said the young artist, pointing out how the movement of sun and weather show time moving forward. This everyday expression tells us to move forward and not linger in the past.

New gallery member William Mark Sommer said about his brightly-colored entry, “I am traditionally a photographer by trade and art but I also love to paint. I went through a tough time for about two years where I was inspired to paint these abstract circles and objects, and I really enjoyed it.”

These and more works will be exhibited for sale at the Blue Line Gallery during the opening reception, January 15, 6-9pm (6-7pm, Roseville Arts members only), and through February 16, Tues-Sat, 10-5.

Curator's Note - January 2011

A new year! And the opportunity to welcome you to a host of new art experiences at the Blue Line Gallery!

In the spirit of new beginnings, this year’s exhibition schedule kicks off with one exhibit dedicated exclusively to photography, another show titled “New Beginnings” that celebrates 41 of our member artists and a third show featuring emerging artists from Roseville’s Cooley Middle School. We will try to revive that freshness repeatedly throughout the year with an array of themes and art media, traditional and out-of-the-box experiences.

Those of you who have been around our halls for awhile may recall the annual photo show we hosted for many years. In the interim since the last of those, some eight years ago, photography has become more widely accepted as a legitimate art medium. Now photographers are encouraged to enter our open shows. Digital photography and the varying degrees of computer manipulation are also recognized as acceptable processes with intriguing artistic possibilities. The Photography Exhibition opening January 15 includes an eclectic mix of traditional and new technology and a full range of themes.

Our photo juror, Lewis Kemper, specializes in nature and outdoor photography, having launched his career in the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite some 30 years ago. Showing mastery of both traditional and digital formats, Kemper’s work is used internationally for editorial and commercial uses and appears extensively in publications by The Sierra Club and The National Geographic Society, among others. In 2003 he was named to Canon USA’s elite group of photographers, The Explorers of Light.  Kemper is also a respected author and teacher.

2011 offers generous opportunities own the works of our ever-expanding and evolving list of member artists, starting with January’s “New Beginnings” in the WestPark Gallery. Our second annual Juried Membership Show, with 50 pieces chosen by CSUS professor Elaine O’Brien, will show in March, and a display dedicated to “Vistas” will follow in February.  And there’s more coming later, including some summer surprises.

Finally, the children’s gallery will bring an exciting array of featured schools from Roseville and the greater South Placer region. March features our 30-somethingth annual high school show--always an impressive testament to the value of arts education in our schools.
You are invited to come see all this and more! Whether you step into the Blue Line to support an artist in your family, to purchase artwork for your collection or to be curious and appreciative, we welcome you.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Something for Everyone

ROSEVILLE, CA , December 9, 2011—Lewis Kemper, a Canon USA “Explorer of Light” photographer, has selected 56 photographs submitted by photographic artists from across the U.S. for the Blue Line Gallery’s 2011 Photography Exhibition. The show opens with a public reception on January 15.

Kemper, who is frequently invited to judge photography exhibits, was impressed with the quality of submissions for this juried exhibition. “Not only is the quality high, but also the diversity of the images is impressive--from portraiture, still life and landscape to abstractions; it is all here.”

The exhibit will include photographs by such regional favorites as James Hirschinger, David Robertson and Jerry Berry, as well as photographs from artists throughout California and six other states.

He has been named one of the 62 Canon USA’s elite group of photographers, “The Explorers of Light.” His fine art photographs have been exhibited nationally and are held in many private and permanent collections, including the Baltimore Museum of Art. His work has been published in magazines, books, and calendars worldwide. Kemper received his BA in Fine Art Photography from the George Washington University.
