“Small Gems” Exhibit  Invites Holiday Shoppers to the Blue Line Gallery



ROSEVILLE, Calif., October 15, 2009—The Blue Line Gallery’s member gallery will feature a special exhibit of original artwork for sale during the holiday season:  small paintings and sculpture by sixteen local artists, none of the artwork larger than 12 x 12 inches.

The “Small Gems” exhibit will open at the Blue Line Gallery on November 10, in plenty of time for visitors to do their holiday gift shopping.  The exhibit features more than 30 diverse pieces by artists Patricia Abraham, Margot Comer, Barry Focha, Karen Fulk, Marilyn Heyman, Ursula Johnson, N. Totten Mack, Kanika Marshall, Donna Naes, Jackie Palmer, Shirley Perry, Cathy Rowe, Ann Saibeni, Myron Stephens, Cynthia Wellington and Jeri Wittbrod. 

Guests are invited to join the exhibiting artists in celebration at a special reception on November 21, 6:30-9:00 p.m., during 3rd Saturday Art Walk. The Saturday event will include special afternoon art activities for children (1-4pm) and the evening reception, with live music, refreshments and demonstrations by exhibiting artists.

$2000 in prizes at Blue Line Gallery Exhibit

ROSEVILLE, Calif., October 12, 2009 An international call to artists has gone out for Roseville Arts’ 33rd Annual Open Show, juried by Shelly Willis, Public Art Administrator for the City and County of Sacramento.

Selected artwork will be exhibited at the Blue Line Gallery February 20 – April 9, 2010, and will be eligible for $2000 in cash awards.  Deadline for submission is January 8, 2010. The exhibit is open to all original works of art.  Artists may submit up to five entries, $15 each or discounts on multiples.  All work will be juried from digital images.  Complete information is available in the prospectus, available online at www.rosevillearts.org , at the Blue Line Gallery, or by sending SASE to the Blue Line Gallery,  405 Vernon Street, Roseville, CA 95678.

ABOUT SHELLY WILLIS
Shelly Willis came to be Public Art Administrator in Sacramento after six years managing the public art program at the University of Minnesota, where she also taught courses in public art.  Before that Willis managed visual arts programming for the City of Fairfield, California, taught at Napa Valley and Solano Community Colleges, served as program coordinator at the California Arts Council, and was the Director of the Institute for Design and Experimental Art, a visual arts center in Sacramento. Willis has a published essay on the state of public art education in the U.S. in Public Art by the Book (Americans for the Arts, 2005) and co-edited the book, Public Art Practice (Routledge New York, 2008).  She holds undergraduate degrees in art history and business administration from California State University, Chico, and is on the advisory board of FORECAST, Public Artworks, a St. Paul non-profit organization that publishes Public Art Review, and supports and advocates for public art nationally.

Youth Poetry Workshop on Veterans Day
Middle schoolers invited to learn ancient Greek Ekphrasis, the art about poetry


ROSEVILLE, Calif., October 7, 2009—The Blue Line Gallery will present “Art about Poetry,” a workshop for middle school youth, on November 11.

In “Art about Poetry,” poet and former newspaper editor John Bowman will teach young adults about Ekphrasis, an ancient Greek style of poetry that connects writing to art. Participants will be engaged in discussion of poetry and art, study the origins and early examples of Ekphrasis, then write poetry about their favorite art in the gallery. Bowman will guide the youth through readings of their poetry and encourage them to share their reactions to these poems.  Finally, students will have the option to leave a copy of their poetry for display next to the artwork described.  The resulting examples of Ekphrasis will be celebrated with a reception at the gallery on Saturday, November 21, 6:30-9:00 p.m. , and will remain in the gallery through January 8, 2010.

“Poetry about Art” is open to all youth, 6-8th grades.  The workshop will be held on November 11, 9:00-11:30am, at the Blue Line Gallery, 405 Vernon Street in Roseville.  A $25 fee for Roseville Arts members ($35 for non-members) will be collected. ROSEVILLE, Calif., October 6, 2009—Roseville Arts will be holding its first fashion show and tea with a twist! With the theme of sustainability, the fashions will consist of gently used clothing, the tables decorated with original pieces of recycled art, and the food locally grown. The event will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2-5pm, at the Blue Line Gallery in the heart of downtown Roseville.  The public is invited to purchase tickets available now on-line or at the gallery.

Co-Chairs of the Fashion Spree and Green Tea event, Kelly Peterson and Valerie Bowman are excited about bringing this new event to the community,  “We want to create an event that not only reminds people of the importance of sustainability in our community, but an event at which everyone will have a lot of fun!  Just imagine walking into the gallery, choosing a brightly colored boa and hat to set the mood and settling down at a wonderfully decorated table.  Beautifully dressed models will glide through the room to music, turning and stopping to show the audience their gorgeous ensembles. The table tops will be decorated with original pieces of art for centerpieces all made of recycled materials.  The fine china, silver and teapots all borrowed from various groups will take you back in time and encourage you to sit, relax and enjoy the tea!”

The fashion show will consist of gently used clothing and accessories provided by ReNew Boutique at 201 Walnut Street in Old Roseville.   Emcee for the event, Kari Hagensmith, will introduce volunteer models and provide direction while keeping the audience well entertained.  Women and young adults from the community are slated to serve as models –hair and makeup furnished by Willo Salon Spa in The Fountains at Roseville and Just B Cosmetics.  Guests will be treated to finger sandwiches, fruit, desserts, and of course tea.  Enhanced by the current exhibits in the Blue Line Gallery, tables will be artfully decorated with recycled art-each in a different theme—guaranteed to be fancy!    

Guests will be encouraged to purchase fashions seen in the show, available for try-on at the Gallery.  In addition, 100% volunteer run, ReNew, located just a few short blocks from the Blue Line Gallery will offer an in-store discount for all attendees directly following the event.    Proceeds from clothing sales at ReNew benefit homeless women and children in the Acres of Hope program.

During the event, Roseville Arts will hold a raffle for some great prizes and will offer a discount in its Gallery Gift Shop—all proceeds from the gift shop and raffle to benefit family oriented programming at the Blue Line Gallery.

Sacramento Airport’s Big Build Project
Public Art Administrator Presents at the Blue Line Gallery


ROSEVILLE, Calif., October 6, 2009—Shelly Willis, Public Art Administrator for the City and County of Sacramento, will speak at the Blue Line Gallery on November 5th  about the largest public art program in the County of Sacramento’s history—the Big Build project at the Sacramento International Airport.

The public is invited to the Blue Line Gallery on November 5, 7:00 p.m., where Shelly Willis will present the public art designs for Phases 1 and 2 of the Sacramento International Airport Big Build project, including artworks by Ned Kahn, Camille Utterback, Joan Moment, Donald Lipski, Christian Moeller and Lawrence Argent, among others. Willis will talk about the range of media, scale and content in the artwork designs—from a discrete interactive and multi-media piece located in the floor of the airport—to a 56 foot long suspended fiberglass sculpture. Attendees will learn about the artists, the development of their designs and how the artwork will be fabricated and installed.    

Fees collected at the presentation will help support ongoing educational programs at Roseville Arts’ Blue Line Gallery.

ABOUT SHELLY WILLIS
Shelly Willis came to be Public Art Administrator in Sacramento after six years managing the public art program at the University of Minnesota, where she directed the development and installation of public artworks on campuses throughout the UM system, developed the first public art minor program in the U. S. and taught courses in public art through the Departments of Urban Studies and Landscape Architecture.  During the ten years before moving to Minnesota, Willis had managed visual arts programming for the City of Fairfield, California and taught at Napa Valley and Solano Community Colleges.  Prior to that, she was program coordinator at the California Arts Council and as the Director of the Institute for Design and Experimental Art, a visual arts center in Sacramento. Among other writings, Willis’ essay on the state of public art education in the U.S. was published by Americans for the Arts in Public Art by the Book, edited by Barbara Goldstein.
